How Do I Become a Priest?

Begin with Prayer and Openness to God’s Will

Every vocation begins with relationship. Before any application or seminary visit, the first step is to deepen your friendship with Jesus Christ. Spend time in silence before the Blessed Sacrament. Attend Mass frequently. Go to Confession regularly. Ask the Lord sincerely:

“Jesus, what do You desire of my life?”

This is not a question of what you want to do but of who God is calling you to become. Many men discover that as they grow closer to Christ, the idea of priesthood moves from fear to peace.

If you’re still uncertain, read How to Know if God Is Calling Me for signs that may help clarify your calling.

Talk with Someone Who Can Help You Discern

No one discerns a vocation alone. God speaks through prayer, but also through the Church. The Vocations Director for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is here to walk with you—listening, praying, and helping you understand what the Lord may be saying.

You can reach out confidentially through our Contact Us page or by talking with your parish priest. Most priests are happy to share their own stories and offer guidance.

Meeting the Vocations Director does not mean you’ve committed to becoming a priest. It means you’re taking discernment seriously and inviting the Church to walk with you.

Experience a Discernment Retreat

A discernment retreat offers sacred time away from daily distractions—time to listen to Christ and meet other men asking the same questions.

In Galveston-Houston, the Vocations Office hosts the Men’s Discernment Retreat each summer at St. Mary’s Seminary, as well as Andrew Dinners and Verbum Tuum discernment gatherings throughout the year.

You can read What to Expect at a Discernment Retreat for details, but the key is to come with an open heart. Many seminarians point to their first retreat as the moment God’s call became clear.

Grow in Virtue, Faith, and Service

Priestly formation begins long before seminary. A man preparing for priesthood is called to live a life of prayer, study, and generosity. That means:

  • Setting aside time daily for prayer and Scripture.
  • Participating actively in parish life—serving at Mass, volunteering, or helping in youth ministry.
  • Seeking holiness through integrity, purity, and humility in everyday life.
  • Building habits of service and leadership at home and in the community.

As the Church teaches, priestly formation begins in the family. Whether you’re in high school, college, or a second career, these habits prepare your heart to serve as Christ served.

Connect with the Vocations Office

After prayer and discernment, the next step is to connect more formally with the Office of Vocations. Together, we’ll help you:

  • Understand the stages of application and formation.
  • Learn about St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston, where priestly training takes place.
  • Explore spiritual direction and parish involvement.
  • Address practical questions about finances, education, and readiness.

Don’t let uncertainty hold you back. The seminary process exists to help you discover God’s will, not to pressure you into a decision. Many men apply simply to continue discerning more deeply with the Church’s guidance.

The Seminary Journey

If, after prayer and discernment, you apply and are accepted as a seminarian for the Archdiocese, your next stage will be formation at St. Mary’s Seminary.

Formation typically lasts six to eight years, depending on your prior education, and focuses on four key dimensions:

  1. Human Formation: Growth in maturity, balance, and virtue.
  2. Spiritual Formation: A deepening life of prayer and devotion to Christ.
  3. Intellectual Formation: Study of philosophy and theology to serve as an effective preacher and teacher.
  4. Pastoral Formation: Hands-on experience in parishes, hospitals, and schools.

These years are not an obstacle—they are a gift. God uses them to shape your heart after His own. Formation is where a calling matures from possibility into joyful certainty.

Overcoming Common Concerns

Many discerning men share similar fears: “I’m not holy enough.” “I have student debt.” “What if I change my mind?”

These questions are normal. Remember, God does not call the perfect; He perfects those He calls.

Our office helps applicants work through obstacles, including financial aid options such as the Labouré Society and the Fund for Vocations. Seminary life also provides spiritual direction and community support, ensuring you never walk the path alone.

The Joy of Saying Yes

Ordination is not the end, but the beginning of a lifelong “yes” to God’s love. Priests stand at the heart of the Church’s life—offering the Sacraments, preaching the Gospel, and guiding souls toward Heaven.

Those who follow this path discover a peace the world cannot give. As Saint John Vianney said:

“The priesthood is the love of the Heart of Jesus.”

A Final Word: God Chooses Ordinary Men

Every priest once stood where you are now—wondering, uncertain, yet quietly hopeful. The same Lord who called Peter the fisherman and Matthew the tax collector continues to call ordinary men today.

If you hear that whisper in your heart, do not be afraid to respond.

Christ is still saying, “Come, follow Me.”
