How To Know If God Is Calling Me

Begin by Listening in Silence

God’s call begins in the heart. Before any decision or conversation, the first step is to enter into prayerful silence and ask the Lord honestly: “What do You desire for my life?” God speaks gently, through peace, attraction, and interior promptings that become clearer with time.

Spend time before the Blessed Sacrament. Attend Mass frequently. Go to Confession. Let Jesus meet you in the quiet. When the soul becomes still, the voice of the Good Shepherd rises above all others.

“Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”

If the idea of a priestly or religious vocation returns again and again, even amid fears, this may be the beginning of a call. God rarely shouts; He invites.

Recognize the Classic Signs of a Vocation

Although every vocation is unique, the Church has long recognized certain signs that often accompany a genuine call from God. Consider whether any of these resonate in your heart:

  • A desire to give your life completely to Christ and His Church.
  • A growing attraction to prayer, the Sacraments, and the priesthood or religious life.
  • An enduring thought that returns despite distractions or attempts to forget it.
  • Encouragement from priests, family, or parishioners who see something in you.
  • A sense of peace—sometimes quiet, sometimes surprising—whenever you imagine saying yes.

These signs do not guarantee a vocation, but they strongly suggest that God is inviting you to explore His will more deeply.

Pay Attention to How Your Soul Responds

When you think about becoming a priest or entering religious life, what do you experience? God’s call usually brings a mixture of holy fear and unmistakable peace. You may feel unworthy, uncertain, or overwhelmed—yet beneath that, something within you feels drawn, steadied, or strangely joyful.

This peace is one of the most reliable signs of the Holy Spirit. Fear fades; peace endures.

Talk with Someone You Trust

Discernment is never meant to happen alone. God speaks through Scripture, prayer, and the Church. A conversation with a priest or the Vocations Director can provide clarity, reassurance, and direction.

You can reach out confidentially through our Contact Us page, or begin by speaking with your parish priest. They can help you recognize what movements are from God and which are from fear or distraction.

Reaching out does not mean you have decided your vocation. It simply means you are taking the voice of God seriously.

Attend a Discernment Retreat or Event

One of the most effective ways to understand God’s call is to step away from noise and immerse yourself in prayer and fraternity. A discernment retreat offers exactly that—time with priests, seminarians, and others asking the same questions.
